Shopping for a dorm room becomes a bonding event

Incoming freshman Madison Zeinert hasn't yet moved to Pepperdine University, but from the playful snapshots of her taken in a photo booth at a local Container Store last Sunday, you might have thought she was at a sorority party. For 18 years, the Container Store has been hosting two-hour College Night events in which incoming freshmen and their parents have the store to themselves to shop for storage and organizing items for dorm rooms. Moms feel a drive to help their kids build a comfortable nest, and the promotion taps into that. Target hosts After-Hours Shopping Events on 69 college campuses, company spokeswoman Andrea McCauley said. Olescia Hanson, a spokeswoman for Dallas-based Container Store, said the retailer is helpful to incoming freshmen who must adapt to living in small spaces. Cindy Adams and her son Kyle Adams, an incoming freshman at Savannah College of Art and Design, said they were getting good ideas for furnishing his dorm room from seeing what other people were buying. "Have you thought about paper towels?" store associate Pattie Williams asked excitedly to people in line while holding up a paper towel rack.
